Arunachal Pradesh governor P.B. Acharya request to allot more MBBS seats
Guwahati, Sept. 8: Arunachal Pradesh governor P.B. Acharya has written to Union minister of health and family welfare Jagat Prakash Nadda to allot more MBBS seats to the state.
In his letter, the governor said Arunachal, like Mizoram and Nagaland does not have any medical college. “As a result of which Arunachal has to send its students for MBBS degree to medical colleges in other states. Every year a minimum of 25 seats is allotted to the state,” Acharya said.
Noting that this year the state has been allotted fewer seats, the governor requested Nadda to intervene to make up for the deficiency by allotting at least five additional MBBS seats to Arunachal.
Acharya requested the minister to review the decision and do justice to Arunachal by allotting more medical seats (quota) than the previous year.
Arunachal’s move comes in the wake of Assam withdrawing the North Eastern Council quota of 13 seats this year.
Assam health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had on Wednesday said the neighbouring states have to approach Dispur which was trying to resolve the issue.
Under the NEC quota, Meghalaya used to get 10 seats while Arunachal, Mizoram and Nagaland used to get a seat each.
Meghalaya has moved the Supreme Court challenging Assam’s “unilateral” decision.
