Kochi: The Supreme Court of India has today granted extension of time till 7 October 2016 to fill the vacant MBBS seats in various Govt./Self-financing Medical Colleges in the State. The order was granted in a special petition filed by Kerala Government seeking deadline extension for MBBS admission.

As per the directives of the SC on MBBS/BDS admission, the admission process shall be completed by 30 September. However, on 28 September 2016, the SC asked the State to conduct combined counselling for admission to unfilled seats in various private self-financing medical colleges and deemed universities. Following this, the Commissioner for Entrance Examination scheduled a spot allotment today at Govt. Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram.

It is learnt that the State Government asked all the private self-financing medical colleges to report the unfilled seats in their institution. Despite the SC order, only Sree Gokulam Medical College and Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church Medical College surrendered the unfilled Merit Seats to the Government. The other medical colleges are yet to inform about the vacant seats in their institution.

At present, Sree Gokulam Medical College submitted 50% of seats to Govt Quota as it has already entered into an agreement with the Govt. However, the KMCT Medical College has neither inked any pact with the Govt, nor surrenedered seats. As the deadline for MBBS admission has been extended, the Govt may fix a date to upload the details of unfilled seats in all private self-financing medical colleges. With the Supreme Court order mandating combined counselling, the private medical colleges, now, have no other choice, but to surrender the unfilled seats to the State.
